The parents accept Parvati as their daughter on Patra Pendi Day, on the first day of the festival. Goddess Parvati (temple idol) comes to her adopted parents' house two days later.The bride is carried in a spectacular parade from her adopted house to the wedding celebration, which takes place at night.

Equally, Lord Shiva, the bride, arrives at the wedding ritual among other Hindu gods and goddesses. The celestial procession is led by Lord Hanuman and Narasimha. For the divine wedding, all of the traditions that are part of a conventional marriage in Odisha are followed.

The holy couple goes on a quest to the town of Nagar Parikrama the following evening, which is known as the 'Sheetala  Sasthi Yatra.'

The wedding of a significant number of Servants or Hijras is another highlight of the festival. They claim they've come to celebrate Shiva's marriage to Ardhanarishwara, who is half man, half female.

Because the wedding occurs during the start of the monsoon season, the festival is also known as Shiva and Parvathi's monsoon wedding.
